IFFLEY’S Fallen were remembered at a service in St Mary’s Church, Mill Lane.

Church bells rang out a muffled half-peal from 9pm before the names of the Fallen were read out.

A wreath was later laid on the graves of two First World War soldiers buried in Iffley Burial Ground, next to the church.

Iffley History Society member Ron Cosford said: “It was very, very humbling but extremely moving.

“It’s important to remember people and the effect of events like the outbreak of war and all the carnage of the war on people.

“To bring them more to living memory is important and it’s important to pass on the reponsibility of the memories to subsequent generations.”

The event included a vigil of music, readings and prayers.

A night prayer and a live television broadcast of the Westminster Abbey service brought the commemoration to an end.
