WHEN managers at The Meadows care home, Didcot, told Ray Hunt they were building a workshop, he whipped off his shirt and said: “Where do I start?”.

Mr Hunt, 78, a self-confessed “DIY man”, says even though The Meadows is a “marvellous” home, he still gets itchy to do a bit of tinkering.

So when the daughter of one of the residents made an anonymous donation of £1,500 to build a workshop to keep residents amused, Mr Hunt, a father-of-five, grandfather and great-grandfather welcomed the news.

He said: “If you take me to a tool store you can get me in but you can’t get me out.

“I’ve always been used to working with my hands, making things, mending things – I just love tools.”

Last month, he and other residents helped to lay the paving stones for their new workshop at the Britwell Road home.

Staff from B&Q in Abingdon have volunteered to come and build and paint the rest of the workshop on Wednesday.

Run by the Orders of St John Care Trust, The Meadows cares for 68 residents.
