CALLS have been made to repair an estate road branded the worst in Oxford.

Oxford City Council must take action to repair or fill in potholes on Barton Village Road, local residents have demanded.

Care assistant David White, 62, said: “We get over 100 buses a day going down here. The road was never built for buses.

“As soon as you get a bit of a hole the extra weight of the buses makes it much bigger.”

The father-of-two said the buses bumping through the potholes caused homes in the street to vibrate.

But he said he had met with engineers from the council who had told him the money was not available to fix it.

He said: “It is the most appalling road in Oxford. This is appalling and they are not going to do anything about it.

“I understand they do not have the money but at a minimum I believe these holes should be filled.”

Barton Community Association secretary Sue Holden said: “I wouldn’t go as far to say it is the worst in Oxford but it is not good.

“It is on a main bus route so it needs to be in a good state of repair.

“I thought they were due to do it but obviously that has not transpired.”

County councillor Glynis Phillips said she was pressing to see the road repaired.

She said: “It is one of those roads that is being ploughed up by buses.”

The Labour councillor said there had been some attempts to fill in potholes, but added: “It is clearly not good enough given the state of the road.”

City council spokesman Chofamba Sithole said: “We are not aware of any highway safety defects in Barton Village Road but we will arrange for an inspector to check the location and carry out any repairs if needed.

“We apply for funding from Oxfordshire County Council every year to carry out routine maintenance on the city’s roads.

“The budget is about £1m and covers all minor roads in the city.

“Unfortunately that funding will not cover every road in Oxford.”
