NEW pupils received a lesson in tying their ties yesterday as they were welcomed to Heyford Park Free School.

Headmaster David Castles welcomed 60 students in an inaugural assembly yesterday morning, the first day of term.

Each child was presented with a tie in the colours of their school house.

Mr Castles said: “It was a really good event and we think it is a great way to make pupils feel welcome to the school.

“We hold the event every year and we also ask parents to come along as a way of including them in the school.

“We had a few tie-tying lessons for those who struggled but it was part of the fun of the day.”

The free school has 180 pupils and is built on the former American Air Force base at Heyford Park.

He added: “We also unveiled the newly refurbished west wing of the school, which is a converted officers’ mess building, so we had the dual excitement of seeing what the building looked like.”
