AT FIRST glance, this exhibition at Art Jericho looks like a collection of old masters.

But look closer, and it becomes clear these are not paintings, but painstakingly created photographs.

London artist Maisie Maud Broadhead spends weeks setting up the costumes, lighting, props and her subjects to create the illusion.

Art Jericho curator Jenny Blyth said: “Maisie describes herself as an image-maker and artist rather than photographer, but she is one of the UK’s top photographers.

Mrs Broadhead trained in Jewellery Making for her Masters degree at The Royal College of Art and developed her photography skills taking pictures of her jewellery.

The Art Jericho show photographs are inspired by the paintings of Vermeer and Hammershoi.

She composes her scenes over months, researching, collecting props and building her sets.

She stages the light to create a strong “painterly” sensibility so her images appear to echo Old Masters.

Speaking at the Machine

Last year she won the Jerwood Makers Open visual arts prize and this year was awarded £20,000 for the Brighton Pavilion contemporary arts commission.

The exhibition at the King Street gallery will run until Sunday.
