The Lord Mayor of Oxford will inspect the City Walls tomorrow.

Every three years the civic leader inspects the section of wall which lies within New College – and is therefore not publically accessible – as part of a ceremony dating back to the 14th century.

When King Richard II granted the land to New College on June 30, 1379, he made it a condition that the college keep the City Walls in good repair and make two entrances which the Lord Mayor can pass through in order to inspect them.

Members of the public will be admitted to the New College gardens once the Lord Mayor – and the rest of the city council – has been admitted at 11am.
