PUPILS from the Cherwell School have received national recognition for a charitable chicken farm project.

Six pupils aged between 16 and 17, from the school in Oxford, won a Giving Nation Social Action Award.

The Giving Nation project is a national initiative to get young people into the charity and voluntary sectors and is run by the government-funded Citizenship Foundation.

Money raised has financed the set-up of chicken farms in Eastern Cape, South Africa, which will provide villagers with a sustainable supply of eggs.

Through a number of fundraising projects, including a Valentine’s Day sale of handmade jewellery, the students raised £2,500.

The group, Miranda Johnson, Naomi Getzler, Eliza Phibbs, Bella Caro, Lok Hin Wong and Charly Pressdee, picked up the award earlier this month, and received a £500 charity donation in recognition of their entrepreneurial skills and fundraising efforts.
