THE literary knowledge of hundreds of Oxfordshire pupils was put to the test during the regional heat of a national contest.

Pupils from across the county gathered at St Gregory the Great School, in Cricket Road, Cowley, for the Kids Lit Quiz.

Youngsters aged between 10 and 13 battled for the regional crown in teams of four by answering 100 questions on children’s literature.

Amelie White, 11, a pupil at Our Lady’s Abingdon school, competed for the second year running.

She said: “It’s a fun experience, with interesting questions and working with your classmates to compete against other schools.”

The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire heat, which was held on Monday, saw pupils at Oxford High School in Belbroughton Road, take home gold.

Pupils from Abingdon’s Larkmead School came second, while The Cherwell School, in Marston Ferry Road, Oxford, finished in third place.

Questions were divided into 10 categories which included poetry, authors, titles, settings, characters and nursery rhymes.

The winning team from Oxford High School will now go on to compete in the national finals in London on Thursday.

National winners will then jet off to Connecticut in the United States, for the World Final in July 2015.
