Morris Motors are to receive the Oxfordshire Senior Cup next month – more than 30 years after winning the final.

The now defunct club beat fellow Hellenic League outfit Bicester Town 1-0 in the centenary final at Witney Town’s Marriott Close ground on May 7, 1985.

Just before the final, the original Senior Cup had been stolen from the clubhouse at Oxford City, who were the supposed cup holders, having won it in 1984.

So instead, the Morris Motors captain Paul Baker was presented the replacement trophy – the Oxfordshire Professional Cup – by Oxfordshire FA president Bill Halsey.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this unlikely cup success, the team and manager Alan Holliday plus committee members are planning a reunion at Southfield Golf Club, Oxford, on Saturday, May 30.

And there they will be presented with the original Oxfordshire Senior Cup, which was eventually recovered.

To make the presentation will be striker Jeremy Charles – nephew of the legendary John, who was a member of Oxford United’s Milk Cup final winning team in 1986.

Baker said: “We’re really looking forward to the day.

“But unfortunately we are unable to contact one member of that original team – Carl Herbert.”

Herbert is understood to have fallen on hard times.

If anyone knows of the whereabouts of this talented footballer, they should contact Baker on bakes23@hotmail.co.uk.

“It would really make our day, if Carl could be there,” added Baker.

Among those turning up will be the Motors’ goalscorer that night Tim Walker, who headed home from Steve McMahon’s free-kick.

But it was not all joy for Walker, who also saw a twice-taken penalty saved by Bicester keeper Kevin Leach.

Bicester, managed by Trevor Cuss, had knocked out Witney Town and Banbury United and were favourites.

But it was Morris, who had beaten Oxford City in the quarter-finals, who prevailed.

Moments after the final, Holliday resigned, saying he wanted to concentrate on his family life and career.

Sadly for Morris Motors, who played at The Barracks, the club disbanded in 1987.

Many of their committee – including secretary Steve Giles – went on to work for Headington Amateurs, who were elected to the Hellenic in Morris’s place.
