Hospitals in Oxfordshire have identified 16 new cases of women who have been victims of female genital mutilation.

According to new figures, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, which operates the John Radcliffe Hospital, the Churchill Hospital and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford plus the Horton General Hospital in Banbury, identified the new cases between September 2014 and February 2015.

The trust was in contact with 94 patients, some of them already known to the hospital.

Most victims suffered FGM – the removal of parts of the female sexual organs for cultural reasons – some years ago in other countries.
