TWO magnificent Dutch naval cutlasses were among the treasures uncovered at an antiques valuation day in Oxford.

Valuer Steve Sewell said the pair of weapons, which date from about 1860, were “very interesting”.

His company, Lockdales Auctioneers, bought the cutlasses from their owner on the spot and will now auction them in July.

Lockdales held the drop-in valuation day at the Cotswold Lodge Hotel in Banbury Road on Monday, offering people on-the-spot cash for antiques.

The company also picked up a pair of 19th century Chinese bronze vases, which will also go for auction later this year.

Mr Sewell, Lockdales consultant for jewellery, watches, coins, banknotes, gold, silver and medals, said: “The cutlasses were a very interesting find, and the vases as well.”

Ipswich-based Lockdales, established in 1996, holds regular valuation days around the country. Valuers will be in Oxfordshire again when they visit Abingdon’s Four Pillars Hotel on May 18, from 11am to 3pm. Residents are invited to bring coins, tokens, stamps, banknotes, medals, swords, deactivated weapons, gold, silver, watches, books and maps.
