THE FIRST South Oxford art festival was such a success organisers have said they could hold another one this year.

More than 100 adults and children went to the inaugural Lake Street Festival of Art over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Works by 13 local painters, photographers, potters and etchers were hung on the walls at South Oxford Community Centre in Lake Street.

Life drawing classes, ceramics sessions and songwriting workshops were also popular over the three-day festival.

The event also raised money for future art activities.

Amateur photographer Debby Forbes, who is the community centre administrator and organised the festival, said: “It went really well. Workshops were well-attended and everyone got a lot out of it.

“The aim was to hold a local exhibition for local artists before Art Weeks.

“Whether we do it again to support Art Weeks next year or whether we put on another one later this year is yet to be decided.

“We all have to get together and think about what what worked well.”

Free activities included a letterpress print for visitors to print their own commemorative bookmark.

Lake Street Playgroup also brought along a branch and invited visitors to decorate it with paint and glitter.

On the Saturday night, the centre threw open its doors for a cabaret party, with world music from the Confluence Collective and spoken word poetry performers.

Works of art from local artists were also on display.

Mrs Forbes, who lives in Lake Street, said: “There were oil paints, water colours, charcoal, three photographers, two lots of etchings, acrylics and two potters.

“We had lots of different comments but they were all along the same lines, saying the exhibition was excellent.”

She said that funds from the workshops would go into a ringfenced arts fund set up two years ago which pays to promote art exhibitions and activities in South Oxford.
