ALICE’S Day in Oxford will be even more fantastic than usual as organisers mark the 150th anniversary of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

A day of events will take place on Saturday, July 4, throughout the city, from 10am-7pm.

And event organisers at the Story Museum in Pembroke Street are seeking 150 people who are prepared to pose as Alices for the day.

On a sunny afternoon on July 4, 1862, Christ Church don Charles Dodgson – also known as Lewis Carroll – took 10-year-old Alice Liddell and her sisters on a boating trip on the Thames from Folly Bridge in Oxford.

The story created for Alice that afternoon became the Alice in Wonderland story, and sparked a revolution in children’s literature when published in 1865.

Alice’s Day is now held the day before the Cowley Road Carnival, to create a weekend of celebration.

The Story Museum will be hosting a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party to mark the occasion.

Spokeswoman Sophie Hiscock said: “July 4 was the day the Alice story was first told, so it’s perfect that Alice’s Day is being held on July 4, this year.

“There will be Alice in Wonderland events across the world this year because of the 150th anniversary so we want to make sure we organise an extra-special Alice’s Day in Oxford.

“We want 150 people to come forward to pose as Alice and, at some point in the day, we will assemble them all at a suitable landmark.

“People will be able to follow a trail around the city to take in different parts of the Alice story.

“There will be a mass-participation lobster quadrille, a dance outside the Museum of Natural History, and there will be talks and displays at different venues including Christ Church, where there will be a display of memorabilia.”

Since 2005, the anniversary has been celebrated in Oxford with Alice’s Day.

People will also be able to see how Alice has been portrayed over 150 years with original printing plates for photographs on display at the Bodleian Library.

There will be photographs of the real Alice Liddell on display at Christ Church library, and lithographs by Japanese artist Hiroko Hanna will be on display in the city centre.

Those taking part are invited to finish their day with a Mad Hatters’ cocktail party at the Perch in Binsey.

The full programme is being finalised and full details will be at storymuseum.org.uk
