A CARTERTON primary school is celebrating after coming out of special measures and being awarded a ‘good’ grade by Ofsted.

The Gateway Primary School in Netheravon Close went into special measures after being inspected in February 2014 when it was rated ‘inadequate’.

Ofsted inspectors said it was failing in the areas of achievement of pupils; quality of teaching and leadership and management.

But in June this year inspectors returned and pronounced the school ‘good’ in all five key areas of leadership and management; behaviour and safety of pupils; quality of teaching; achievement of pupils and early years provision.

Headteacher Sharon Mullins who has been at the school since September 2013, said: “It’s been one of those situations where we’ve had to work together as a team and make sure the school has been improving.

“We’re very pleased with the achievement. It’s so positive now for the children.”

A particular strength Ofsted commented on is its support for children in moving to and from the school because their parents are service personnel at nearby RAF Brize Norton and frequently get posted to different areas.

Mrs Mullins also paid tribute to Carterton Primary School and Carterton Community College which are partnered with the Gateway in a federation of schools.
