A RESCUE dog has gone the extra mile after clocking up 500km by completing her 100th Parkrun.

Leah and proud owner Les Newell completed the 5km circuit around Abingdon’s Rye Meadow, marking the labrador cross’ 100th circuit of the route.

Mr Newell and his wife Karen got seven-year-old Leah from the Irish Retriever Rescue UK charity in 2010 and since then the pair have regularly run the weekly Abingdon Parkrun.

Wearing a bright high-vis jacket with “100th Parkrun” emblazoned on the top, Leah and Mr Newell set off with about 200 other runners on Saturday.

The 40-year-old, who runs for Oxford City Athletics Club, said: “She loves it – I think it’s the highlight of her week.

“She charges off like a nutter.

“I am really proud of her – it’s quite an achievement. There are a lot of people here who have done 50 or 100 runs, but for a dog to get 100, I don’t think there are many who have done that.”

Mrs Newell, 37 from Radley, said her husband and Leah are a great pair of runners.

She added: “I am really proud of her, she is a beautiful dog who has come a long way.

“She loves people, she loves to run, she is just a happy dog.”

Last week was a triple delight for the family, with Mr Newell turning 40 on Tuesday, achieving a personal best in the 1,500m on Wednesday and then Leah running her 100th Parkrun.

Abingdon Parkrun began with 40 runners in May 2011, but has since grown to the point where it regularly has more than 240 – hitting a high of 296.

Caroline Hutchings, Abingdon Parkrun run director said the pair were amazing.

She added: “We have a large community and Leah is part of that.”
