YOUNGSTERS got their creative juices flowing to transform the streets of Headington into rainbow artworks.

Schoolchildren were given the chance to decorate the pavements and paths with colourful chalk sketches and pictures as part of a global arts festival this month.

The Big Chalk was organised by Jean Wykes, who was stationed near Barclays Bank in London Road on Saturday handing out chalk to children so they could add a splash of colour to the area.

Youngsters like Kieran Beard, five, and three-year-old brother Robin, pictured, went back to the drawing board to create colourful characters on in the main road.

The streets between Oxford Brookes and Headington were painted reds, blues, greens and pinks throughout the day as the event was chalked up as a success.

Children can also produce their own pictures, which will be exhibited at Oxford Brookes University and Barclays throughout October.

The event is part of The Big Draw, which was launched this year at the Bodleian’s Weston Library by Oxford author Philip Pullman and illustrator and Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell last month.

The Big Draw is an international celebration of drawing which encourages people to pick up their pens and pencils and get sketching.
