A WHEAT-FILLED heat pack caused a fire at a home in Kennington last night.

Fire crews were called just before 10pm after reports of smoke at the property in Liddiard Close.

Two fire engines arrived and firefighters discovered it had started in the microwave and involved a personal warmer, sometimes known as a wheat bag.

The residents were alerted by their smoke alarms and escaped without injury.

Incident Commander, Watch Manager Simon Piper from Rewley Road Fire Station said: “Wheat bags can bring comfort to many people but manufactures instructions should be followed to prevent the risk of fire.

"On this occasion the residents were lucky that they were awake and had working smoke detectors."
