Sir – It would help to make Oxford a world-class city if the missing door on the telephone box at Carfax were replaced.
This is no ordinary red telephone box. It is Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s original 1924 design, the only example of this in Oxford, and is a grade 2 listed building.
It has several features which are noticeably superior to the 1935 red boxes found elsewhere. It has a plaque inside in memory of Nicholas Medley who donated it to the city, a railway employee who died tragically young.
What is not mentioned is that he also donated eight other red telephone kiosks to the city, to be erected in key positions like the High Street and Broad Street.
Indeed, only the one remaining in Headington was not donated by him.
This door has been missing since long before Christmas, and it gives quite a bad impression to the very many tourists who gather nearby and who photograph the clock. It also seems very disrespectful of Mr Medley’s memory.
