The Garden florist sports spectacular Oxford United shop display in Headington

There was nothing mild about a florist's shop window in London Road, which screams support for Oxford United. 

The Garden is sporting a spectacular window display emblazoning the word "yellows" written in flowers alongside the team's navy blue logo. 

Owner Paul Birtles, 57, said: "Headington is the spiritual home of Oxford United. We have a very good connection where we are physically. A lot of people in Headington, the older generation, remember they are from here so it's only natural for us to do this. 

"This is a bit of a thank you to the club and the supporters who go and watch every week."

The Chiselhampton resident, who also has a store in the Covered Market, said passers-by had shown "massive interest" in their efforts, snapping photos and coming inside especially to thank the staff. 

His team-of-four laboured over their art for two days, meticulously planting hundreds of chrysanthemums into place.

He added: "Everyone is excited about the big match. It's a way of showing the club and supporters that we are a community which likes to give something back."

Mr Birtles and his florists were visited by members of the Johnstone's Paint, who brought the cup trophy which Oxford United hopes to win on April 3.

More than 30,000 fans will make the trip to Wembley stadium to spur on the team in their final against Barnsley.

Jonathan McCourt, brand and sponsorship manager for Johnstone’s Paint, said: "It's fantastic - you can't paint the city yellow better than that." 

His team visited as part of a two-day tour of Oxford ahead of the match.

He added: "It's all about community engagement, that's a big drive. It's to try to build excitement before Wembley. It doesn't happen every week."

Solicitor Melvin Berryman, who works above the florist, described the display as "absolutely fantastic".

The dedicated Oxford United fan, 68, said: "I was down here when they were putting it up, giving them advice. It's lovely."
