A BUS operator has driven home the importance of teamwork after winning an award for its service into the capital.

The X90, which runs from Oxford to London and back, was ranked second in the country at the UK Coach Awards for ‘top express operation’.

In a second and separate celebration, one of the company’s female drivers was shortlisted for an award which celebrates women in transport careers.

Phil Southall is managing director of Oxford Bus Company which runs the service.

He said of the coach award: "We're delighted to receive this, which shows just how much we’ve put into the service over the last couple of years.

"The X90 offers more seats between Oxford and the capital than ever before and the highest specification coaches in its history both environmentally and in terms of passenger comfort.

“The award is a credit to our hard working team, both in the driver's seat and behind the scenes."

Judges said they were impressed by “continuous improvement to the service” and an “investment in new vehicles” which increased passenger numbers.

Elsewhere the FTA Everywoman in Transport and Logistics Awards, which recognise women who have excelled in the traditionally male-dominated industry, have pegged Loretta Taylor as one of the frontrunners in the ‘driver of the year’ category.

Mr Southall added: “Loretta is a real credit to our company and her nomination will be no surprise to customers who’ve experienced her excellent service on our X90 route.

"She is a great role model for women looking to succeed in our industry and we’re really proud that she has been shortlisted for this prestigious award.”

She will go up against two other finalists in her category at an award ceremony in London on May 26.

Maxine Benson MBE, co-founder of Everywoman, said: “It comes as the transport industry seeks to enhance its image as one that offers exciting opportunities to all women, from young women entering the workforce to those returning after a career break.

"This year’s finalists are the role models who demonstrate the industry is open to all backgrounds and skill-sets and that it welcomes talented and ambitious women. We know these finalists will inspire others to follow in their footsteps.”
