A GRANDFATHER who has no memory of veering off the road with his caravan on the A34 at Milton wants to seek out a couple who potentially saved his life.

Donald Calder, from Fife in Scotland, was driving down to Southampton to travel to Spain for a four-day break earlier this month when he got on to the A34 southbound.

He crashed near the Milton Interchange shortly before 11.30am on April 5 and was rushed to the Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital in a life-threatening condition.

That's the last he remembers before waking up in the John Radcliffe Hospital several days later.

The 68-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest at the wheel and wants to thank a mystery couple - who may be called Margaret and John Boden - he believes followed him off the road and saved his life.

The retired construction engineer said: "I don't remember anything after the crash until I woke up in the John Radcliffe Hospital I don't know how many days later - I thought 'hang on this isn't Santander'.

"It's all been very bizarre and I just can't remember a thing."

Mr Calder said he was told afterwards that his caravan had veered off the A34 and down a bank.

He said: "Whoever was in the car behind me managed to get me out of the car and performed CPR and potentially saved my life calling the emergency services.

"I finally got back home and checked my emails and someone sent me a link to the story on the Oxford Mail website with emergency vehicles lining the A34 and realised I was the driver."

The grandfather-of-three returned to Fife last week after his family, his daughter Mo and his son Moray, came to visit him in the Headington hospital.

He now wants to thank those who saved his life and has one clue as to who his guardian angels might have been.

Mr Calder said: "I had a get well soon card in my room at the JR - it just said 'hope you're feeling better from Margaret and John Boden'.

"If I could get in contact with them to say thank you that would be marvellous. I also want to thank the emergency services who helped me that day."

South Central Ambulance Service said the driver suffered a medical emergency at the wheel. An air ambulance was called to the scene but Mr Calder was taken to hospital by land ambulance.
