A man in his thirties is fighting for his life after his car hit a tree outside an Oxford University science building this morning.

The man was driving a black Volkswagen Golf down Parks Road just after 5am when it left the road and ended up against the railings outside the Department for Physics.

He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in a life-threatening condition where he remains.

Another man, in his twenties, was seriously injured but is not thought to be in a life-threatening condition.

The road was closed for about four hours while roads Policing officers and other emergency services dealt with the incident and investigated the circumstances before it was re-opened at 9am.

Two ambulance crews from South Central Ambulance Service took both men to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Thames Valley Police appealed for witnesses to come forward and help the investigation.

Investigating officer Sgt Daniel Collett, from the Joint Operations Unit for Roads Policing, said: “I would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this collision in which two men have sustained serious injuries.

"I would also like to speak to anyone who saw the vehicle travelling prior to the collision who has not already spoken to officers."
