PLANS are already being concocted to turn last year's community Christmas tree lighting in Blackbird Leys into a fully-fledged winter festival.

On December 1 last year a crowd of chilly residents, local market-stall holders and primary school youngsters gathered at the Church of the Holy Family for the first Christmas tree lights switch-on in the estate's 60-year history with Lord Mayor Rae Humberstone.

The tree was donated by Paul Whitman, the manager of Deltey's in Blackbird Leys Road, alongside a £500 donation.

Following the success, locals including churchgoer Russell Price, a member of feedback group the Leys Voice, have set about planning an expanded version this year.

Mr Price said: "Last year we ended up with the ceremony taking place round the side of the church. People said 'It's great; let's do it again next year'.

"Paul had thought it would be good to do something which wasn't as confined to the church, but spread over towards the shops."

It is hoped the green space in the Blackbird Leys district centre, as well as the car park in front of the shopping parade, could be closed for a night to accommodate food and stalls alongside the 2016 Christmas tree.

Mr Price added: "It would be a bit more of a winter festival. In addition to the market we could have food from the Polish group and ethnic groups on the estate.

"We are putting out feelers at the moment. We hope it will be a partnership between the city council, local shops, schools and other facilities."
