AT 113 years old, this is quite possibly Oxford's oldest resident.

Emmanuelle the tortoise lives at Regent's Park College in Pusey Street in Oxford, and is certainly the oldest resident there.

The college says Emmanuelle has been there longer than anyone can remember, and no one knows how she came there, but every year the students and staff still celebrate her birthday.

This year, the college threw Emmanuelle a birthday party on Saturday, May 7, and used the occasion to raise a bit of money for a good cause – Meningitis Now.

From 1pm to 5pm, the college threw open its doors to the public, putting on live music, a bouncy castle, a baking contest and other food and drink.

The fundraiser was held in memory of Regent's student Antonia Bruch, who died from meningitis in 2009.

Regent’s Park College student Thomas Jordan, who has helped to organise the birthday bash, said: "In life, there are few more important dates than that of Emmanuelle’s birthday. Having reached 113, she was delighted so many people came to celebrate with her."

Originally thought to be male, the tiny tortoise was previously called Emanuel, but after her true gender came to light the college made a slight adjustment to her spelling.

During the 1980s and 1990s Emmanuelle was a regular winner at the Corpus Christi Tortoise Fair, and starred in Blue Peter in the 1980s.
