A MURAL competition has been launched to help tackle graffiti on Oxford Canal.

Four murals will be painted on two bridges along the canal, which has been scourged by graffiti for many years, thanks to a new partnership of the Canal & River Trust, Thames Valley Police, boaters and the Waterways Management Company.

Amateur artists, students, children and residents are being called on to come up with designs for the murals, which have been funded by a grant from Tesco.

Project organiser Tom Cox said: "The committee wanted to tackle the graffiti problem in a really positive way.

"We think it will turn what is an eyesore into an outstanding piece of artwork but we need as many people as possible to come forward and submit designs."

Two murals will be painted on Elizabeth Jennings Way bridge - with the theme of the canal's life past and present and the local area.

Frenchay Road bridge will have the other two murals and the theme for them will be the wildlife and natural scenery along the canal.

All the submitted designs will be pulled together by a professional artist to become part of the overall mural.

To submit designs email oxfordcanalmural@gmail.com by June 20.

You will be able to see all the entries and vote for your favourite on Saturday June 25 at the Oxford Canal Festival at Aristotle Lane Recreation Ground between 2pm and 6pm.
