A FIRE caused by a lightning strike at a food waste plant containing methane gas caused up to £250,000 of damage.

Agrivert Food Waste Plant in Benson, near Wallingford, was struck by the bolt of lightning at about 5pm on Thursday last week, and firefighters fought the blaze from 5.15pm until about 11pm.

A local resident captured a video of the flames leaping into the sky, as 450 cubic metres of methane gas in the plant intensified the fire.

No-one was hurt in the incident.

Harry Waters, commercial director for Agrivert, said: "We haven't fully costed the damage but it could cost up to £250,000 the replace the roof, made of a PVC Polyester fabric.

"This is a protection roof which sits above a gas membrane.

"We ordered a new roof by close of play on the day of the fire and hope it will be in place by Tuesday."
