NATHAN Douglas admits his Olympic dream could be over after suffering a disappointing exit from the European Athletics Championships.

The Oxford City triple jumper, captain of the Great Britain team in Amsterdam, failed to make the final yesterday.

That means Douglas still does not have a second Olympic qualifying standard jump of more than 16.85m, and a trip to Rio is now unlikely.

“I don’t think there will be another opportunity to get the standard for the Olympic Games," he said.

"I think the Europeans were the last competition for selection.

"You never know, something may spring up, but I would be very surprised if that was the case."

Douglas started the event with a leap of 16.33, which was followed with a no jump and then 16.24.

The competition was interrupted when maintenance staff had to be called to repair a problem with the run-up.

And Douglas admitted it was an issue.

“It was difficult for everybody, but you just have to try and get on with it," he said.

"I tried to stay calm and relaxed. My second was a big foul so I knew I only had one opportunity left.

"I went for it on my last jump, but I knew I had to spot that board. But I have just made a mistake on that last jump."
