DOUBLE yellow lines are set to be placed in a busy Abingdon street to tackle "inappropriate and dangerous commuter parking".

Transport boss David Nimmo Smith approved the restrictions in Thames View during a meeting at County Hall yesterday.

Oxfordshire County Council said it would reduce the amount of on-street parking available but this was "necessary" due to high numbers of commuters parking there.

The local authority contacted 220 homes and businesses by letter about the changes but only received 10 responses.

The council added: "It is acknowledged the introduction of the proposed restrictions will reduce the amount of on-street parking space available for all but it is considered necessary to do so in order to allow safe passage of vehicles along the carriageway and pedestrians along the footways.

"Alternative parking is available in the nearby car park operated by Vale of White Horse District Council."

It said "potential abuse" of private parking areas because of the changes were "a matter for the owners".

But residents have raised concerns about the loss of parking – particularly for households that owned more than one car – and warned the restrictions could push commuters to other areas.

Meanwhile, others said the current levels of parking caused safety issues, blocking lines of sight for drivers and pedestrians and "artificially" narrowing the road.
