THE idea of teenagers being allowed to unleash their creativity on a Grade II listed building would horrify most but one talented artist has been allowed to do just that.

Melissa Hartell was on the front of house team at the Sudbury House Hotel, focusing on a career in hospitality after setting aside her dreams of becoming an interior designer.

But after working at the Faringdon hotel for more than a year, her artistic talent was spotted by her manager and the 19-year-old from Wantage was given an opportunity of a lifetime.

She was given a brief to re-design suite 57 in the hotel.

Miss Hartell said: "When I was given the brief I initially found it quite intimidating but equally exciting and challenging.

"The brief was quite open, with a few restrictions and an emphasis on creating a luxurious suite which was classic with a hint of contemporary.

"I immediately set to work and had just two weeks before I had to present my design ideas."

She was tasked with redesigning a bedroom with a bathroom and a lounge, with the hardest part being finding suitable hardwearing fabrics and furnishings within a specific budget.

But on a trip to Manchester met with the Forest Furniture Company, manufacturers of a range of bespoke contract quality furniture.

The former Abingdon and Witney College art student added: "It was really exciting unwrapping the furniture and placing the items in the room.

"To see my vision come together made me feel very proud and also very grateful to be trusted to undertake such a fantastic project."

Ulrike Le Roux, general manager at the hotel, said she knew how much Miss Hartell loved design and wanted to give her an opportunity to develop her talents.

She said: "As soon as I saw Melissa's mood board and sketched visuals, I knew she had captured exactly the right look and feel for the rooms we had to complete.

"Her design was well thought through, very balanced, tasteful and calm.

"It was one thing designing the bedroom but the bathroom space, with its wonky walls and uneven floor, was a massive challenge.

"The suite also has a spacious lounge area which overlooks the gardens so how the windows were dressed was an important factor too."

But this is not the only chance Miss Hartell will get to flex her creative muscles.

Ms Le Roux added: "As Melissa works her way up the career ladder in the hotel she will have more opportunity to do similar projects.

"Hotels are always looking to revamp and uplift their rooms and suites."

Suite 57 was finally finished in May with a night's stay starting at £350.
