PEOPLE are being asked for their views on whether smoking should be banned in children's play areas in Oxford.

Oxford City Council said it introduced a three-month trial, no-smoking scheme at Cutteslowe Park, Florence Park and Sandfield Road.

The local authority is now asking if the measure should apply city-wide in a public consultation, running from July 14 to September 30.

Meanwhile, the council is also asking whether Florence Park should continue to be locked at night.

At present it is unlocked at 8am each morning and locked at dusk or no later them 9pm during the summer months, the council said.

It is the only park owned by the city council which is locked at night.

The local authority added: "This means the park is not accessible to people wishing to use it early in the morning or later in the evening for dog walking or jogging.

"There are of course significant costs involved in this unlocking and locking the park.

"Despite this, some local residents and park users have previously stated their preference for the park to remain locked at night."

A consultation asking people for their views started on July 14 and will end on September 30.
