Remember the ice bucket challenge of 2014?

In Oxfordshire we even had Leader of the county council, Ian Hudspeth in the hot - or ice cold - seat raising money for Motor Neurone Disease by having a bucket of icy water dumped on his head.

Well now the money raised from the social media phenomenon has funded a gene breakthrough.

One of the projects funded by the £87.7m raised by the challenge was called Project MinE.

The project's researchers announced earlier this week they have identified a new gene associated with the disease, which experts say could lead to new treatment possibilities.
