VOLUNTEERS gathered in silence for a morning candlelit vigil during the One Earth, One Humanity, One Future Festival.

The three-day event, which was hosted at Oxford's Worcester College, campaigned for environmental and social change.

The festival was hosted by Resurgence Trust and Magazine, serving as not only an awareness event but a celebration of its 50th anniversary.

Editor Greg Neale said: "We had the candle ritual every morning, and a semi silent walk of the grounds before we started the event.

"Those who participated really felt that it helped prepare them for the day to have a moment of calm to focus the mind, as well as exercise of course."

Former editor Satish Kumar, who stepped down in August on his 80th birthday, took part in the vigil.

He also recently completed a 50-mile pilgrimage from the source of the Thames to Oxford to take a stand for a more sustainable future, accompanied by eventually 40 supporters.

He said: “Our pilgrimage was an ode to Gaia, reminding us that we need to protect nature. This key message of Resurgence for the last 50 years has never been more relevant.”

The One Earth, One Humanity, One Future festival was attended by hundreds who enjoyed talks by major figureheads such as Nobel Price Nominee Scilla Elworthy.
