CELEBRITY guests have been banished from Banbury's Christmas lights-switch-on as the town council redoubles its efforts to create a bigger, better event.

Hundreds are set to gather in the centre of town on Sunday, November 27 to hail the start of the festive season.

In previous years TV stars including Coronation Street actor Chris Gascoyne and X Factor performer Sam Bailey have brought an extra sparkle to proceedings, but this year Banbury Town Council has announced it will be focusing on creating a vibrant Christmas event without any special guests.

General services committee chairman Colin Clarke said: "For many years we’ve enjoyed having celebrities switch on our Christmas lights, but things have to change."

Instead visitors can look forward to a seasonal market packed with Christmas crafts and gifts as well as food and drink stalls to keep people fed and watered.

Live music will be performed by local artists while families can enjoy hands-on workshops, a visit to Santa's grotto and funfair rides and attractions.

Before the switch-on eight local choirs will sing carols and other seasonal numbers. Fireworks will light up the sky afterwards.

Mr Clarke added: "This year we’re starting a new theme by creating a real Christmas atmosphere for people of all ages.

"We think the new set-up will appeal to everyone and not just those who like a particular TV programme."

The event is being co-organised by local organisation Banbury Presents, which is best known for creating town-wide outdoor arts festivals but also launched science fiction extravaganza Geek Con in Banbury in January this year.

On the day the market will be open from 1pm to 8pm, with the lights switch-on at 5pm followed by fireworks.
