The 28-year-old was driving his white Suzuki Swift in Eynsham Road at about 3.30am when it careered into the shelter before ending up in a hedge.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin has been informed.
This afternoon, flowers were left at the side of the road where the vehicle stopped.
Investigating officer PC Duncan Vale said: "This was a tragic incident in which a man has sadly died.
- The bus shelter before the crash.
"We are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the vehicle in the lead up to the collision, or the collision itself."
One man who called the police, but wanted to remain anonymous, said: "I came out and the car was in the bush, he had come through the bus stop."
A neighbour, who also wanted to remain anonymous added: "It was early and I came out afterwards.
"My wife heard the crash because it is usually very quiet at night here, but the crash was very loud."
It appears the bus shelter has been removed following the crash.
South Central Ambulance spokesman David Gallagher said: "We responded with two rapid response vehicles and a paramedic team leader but unfortunately the driver was confirmed deceased at the scene."
