SOME of the finest artworks by Oxfordshire painters, sculptors and printmakers have been brought together at a spectacular free show.

Oxford Art Society said it was 'proud' to open the exhibition of selected members’ work at Oxford Town Hall last weekend.

And, the group promises, the wide range of works on display means there is something of interest for everyone.

The show was officially opened on Saturday afternoon by Professor Christopher Brown, director emeritus of the Ashmolean Museum.

Society chairman Peter Farley said: "The Oxford Art Society is proud to be putting on an exhibition of selected members’ work.

"Members from around the county are coming together to show some of the finest arts works created by Oxfordshire’s painters, sculptors and printmakers.

"The wide range of work on display means there is something of interest for everyone."

Oxford Art Society describes itself as an exhibiting society of painters, printmakers and sculptors which ‘prides itself on encouraging the practice of fine arts’.

The group has been exhibiting in and around the county for the past 125 years.

It was formed in 1891 at the instigation of Walter Tyrwhitt, who wanted to encourage art in the city and university.

The first president was Hubert von Herkomer, RA, who had succeeded John Ruskin as the Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford.

He demonstrated painting in his lectures because he said he believed that knowledge of painting was important for understanding history of art.

Current painters include landscape artist Andrea Bates, from Enstone; portrait specialist Andrew Brady and surrealist Nicky Cooney.

It also counts James Ort, Martin Smith and Sarah Dearling among its sculptor members.

The exhibition is being staged at the Museum of Oxford at Oxford Town Hall, St Aldates, until February 26.

The museum is open from 10am to 5pm, except when it will be closed on the 5th, 12th and 19th.
