AS women around the world celebrate their social, economic, cultural and political achievements those living in Rose Hill will have a chance to come together and learn new skills.

The estate's community centre will host a series of events on Friday, March 10, to mark International Women's Day, which is held two days earlier.

The global event calls for a more inclusive, gender equal world and organisers of the Rose Hill event hope to attract women from a range of backgrounds to take part in dozens of different activities.

Co-organiser Po Yung said: "We want to appeal to women from all different cultures.

"It is an opportunity for women to come in to the centre.

"Last year the staff at the centre wanted to do something but it had just opened and they were having the grand opening around this time.

"This year things are more settled and we want to take advantage of the very diverse community here."

Activities women will be able to get involved in include head and hand massage, singing lessons, arts and crafts and fitness classes.

Ms Yung said: "There will also be an opportunity for women to play Boccia, which is a seated exercise.

"We wanted to make sure there was something for older ladies.

"We have also got portrait photography going on for professional photographs, if people are looking for photos for CVs or for LinkedIn."

Other activities, such as basic car maintenance classes, focus on practical skills that women may not be able to pick up elsewhere.

The earliest Women's Day observance was held in New York in the United States on February 28, 1909 but it has since become a regular event worldwide on March 8 each year.

This year's theme is 'Be Bold For Change' and calls on people to help forge a better working world.

Ms Yung said: "We really want people to come along and use the community centre.

"There might be people who have never had the chance to use it.

"Oxford City Council is funding this so we are very lucky to be able to put these events on for free.

"It is also about having the opportunity to find out more about the area and the reason the centre was built – to being people together.

"It is a really nice modern open space."

Events will start at 1pm and the last class will be boxfit at 6pm.

All events are free, but the head and hand massage and car maintenance classes require a refundable £2 deposit.
