OXFORD's annual litter-picking weekend has been officially launched with help from pupils at The Cherwell School.

OxClean will return for its 10th year from Friday.

On Friday organisers of the Spring clean-up gathered with politicians and pupils at The Cherwell School in Marston Ferry Road, Summertown.

Oxfordshire’s Deputy Lieutenant Richard Venables and the Lord Mayor of Oxford Mohammed Altaf-Khan were also in attendance at the launch.

It is expected at least 1,000 volunteers will join together to blitz ‘grot spots’ across the city.

The message is simple – 'Don't drop litter - bin it' –and residents can form groups to pick the area they want to clean up, with litter pickers and rubbish bags supplied and then taken away for disposal by Oxford City Council.

OxClean organiser Rosanne Bostock said they had about between 70 and 80 groups signed up so far to blitz neighbourhoods, which range from Blackbird Leys to Donnington.

She added they had more litter pickers than ever before signed up and that the school had been very proactive in what was deemed a successful launch event.
