A COWLEY mum has urged Aldi to recall its baby food product after she nearly fed the 'disgusting' contents to her 11-month-old son.

Liz Steven bought a Mamia Beef Casserole with Vegetables pouch for her son Lachlan but on opening it she discovered 'mouldy foreign objects' which she feared could have made him ill.

Aldi said incidents like this were rare but could happen due to damage to the packaging and that it would investigate the issue with its supplier.

The mother-of-one said she was initially offered a refund – worth 65p – before accepting £20 worth of Aldi vouchers but now wants to warn other mums and called for Aldi to recall the product.

The 34-year-old said: "I squeezed it out and three bits of what looked like mould or skin came out of the pocket - it was disgusting, it looked like decaying matter.

"My husband, Matt, came over to have a look and he was horrified, the smell was terrible.

"When it comes to baby food these things should be investigated seriously, it could have made him seriously ill."

The medical communications officer said she bought the food pouch from Aldi in Botley at the beginning of the month and it was in-date when she opened it on Saturday.

She said Aldi's response was 'totally inadequate' as she couldn't see any damage in the first place.

She said: "I have occasionally bought the fruit pouches from them before and normally do the cooking myself but I had the beef casserole in case I needed to urgently feed him.

"Aldi said it may be a breach in the packaging but if that is the case they should be recalling the product - we don't know how many more packets might be affected.

"It didn't seem to be perforated in any way which leave me wandering if this was in fact some foreign object in the food."

She added that a Mamia fruit pouch she bought several months ago 'blew up' and had fermented causing her to throw it out.

Mamia is a baby brand exclusive to Aldi and the supermarket stocks nappies, foods, shampoo, wipes for tots.

Bryn Madden, from Aldi, said: "Incidents like this are very rare, but can occur as a result of damage to the packaging and the product being exposed to air.

"We have apologised to Ms Steven and are investigating this with our supplier."
