A date for a by-election has been announced following the death of Labour city councillor Van Coulter earlier this month.

Tributes have poured in for the Barton and Sandhills councillor who died on March 13 aged 57.

Today it has been announced that the by-election will take place on Thursday, May 4, on the same day as other council elections.

Oxford City Council spokesman Tony Ecclestone said: "The council’s Returning Officer has received a letter, signed by two electors, requesting that he hold a poll to fill the vacancy.

"As such he has given notice that the by-election will be held on May 4, 2017, concurrent with the other elections being held that day.

"Nomination papers for the by-election are available from the town hall."

Mr Coulter, of Boundary Brook Road, served as a city councillor since being elected in May 2010.

He grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and moved to Oxford about 10 years ago.
