TESCO supermarket is scouting for good causes in Oxfordshire to support through its 5p bag charge.

The chain’s Bicester branch is urging local community groups to get in touch as it launches the latest funding offer.

Groups can bag up to £4,000 worth of grant funding and the cash all comes from the 5pm plastic bag levy that was brought in last year.

Lindsey Crompton, head of community at Tesco, said: “The money raised from our customers buying bags is making a big difference to local communities across the country.

“Thanks to Bags of Help, millions has been invested so far on local projects like parks, sports facilities, school playgrounds and community gardens – projects that have all been chosen by our customers.”

Three groups across Bicester will be awarded grants every other month and Tesco customers will have the chance to vote for their winner at the check-out.

The scheme is being held in partnership with Groundworks which works to support people in disadvantaged areas across the country.

Groundworks CEO Graham Duxbury said: “It’s great to see the positive difference that Bags of Help is making to communities across the UK and we are delighted to be involved in supporting thousands of local people make their mark in their community. The scale and variety of activities supported by Bags of Helps shows what can be achieved when communities are given the support to make change happen in their local area.”
