A TAKEAWAY plan for a former estate agents in Headington has upset the neighbours.

A fast food firm has applied for planning permission to open in the former Connells unit at 137a London Road, next to Bury Knowle Park.

The estate agents left the shop empty when it moved up the road, but residents have hit out at the takeaway proposal saying there are already too many cafes and fast food outlets on the street.

A planning application submitted to Oxford City Council earlier this week does not reveal the business lined up to take on the long-vacant unit.

Gregoriy Galitzine, who lives in Headington, commented on the plans, saying: “We have enough fast food outlets and cafes in the area.

“I wish the unit could instead be a shop offering a service we don’t currently have.”

Julia Boone, who lives in Lime Walk, said: “Headington has enough cafes and restaurants, we need more diversity in the shopping area, not more food outlets.”

The site sits next door to Chinese takeaway Shanghai House and is opposite Domino’s and Cafe Bonjour.

Further along the road there is a Posh Nosh fish and chip shop, the Turkish Bar Meze, Asian Mama, and Chinese Yummy’s.

The Oxford Local Plan states that the proportion of ground floor units in Headington must not fall below 65 per cent retail. A number of applications have been rejected in recent years because of the policy but a new local plan is being considered.

A decision is expected to be made by May 18.
