THE city council’s top man will be taking home a similar six-figure salary when he takes charge of another local authority.

After ten years as chief executive at Oxford City Council, Peter Sloman has his sights set on pastures new and will take on the same job at Reading Borough Council in July.

During a full council meeting in Reading on Tuesday night ,it was revealed that Mr Sloman’s salary as chief executive would be between £130,000 and £156,000.

Previously the Oxford Mail revealed that in 2014/15 Mr Sloman bagged himself an annual salary of more than £143,000.

This is the first time in nine months that Reading will have a permanent member of staff for the job.

Mr Sloman said: “My experience in Slough and in Oxford means I also understand the huge pressures on towns like Reading, both in demand for council services and the delivery of high quality council services.

“This is a hugely challenging time for local government everywhere, but working closely with councillors in Reading I am determined to ensure the council continues to work hard.”

Tony Ecclestone, a spokesman for Oxford City Council, said it was too early at this stage for the council to have put an advertisement out for Mr Sloman’s old job.

He said: “It is a bit premature, it has not got that far as advertising.”
