AN investigation is under way after a row between a bus driver and a cyclist was caught on camera.

Oxford Bus Company said it would be looking into the incident after receiving footage showing one of its employees who had apparently got out of his bus mid-journey to argue with a cyclist during this morning's rush hour.

An Oxford Mail reader was walking to work on Botley Road at 8.40am when he passed the incident and began recording on his mobile phone.

The video shows a cyclist talking to a man who appears to be a bus driver next to a stationary 400 Oxford Bus Company vehicle.

The cyclist, who is with his bike and wearing a helmet and high-vis clothing, is heard saying: “You were incredibly inconsiderate, you cut across the cycle lane”, and the bus driver replies: “No I was not, I was already there and I’d committed.”

The man who filmed the argument, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “It seemed like the driver was of the view that the cyclist had cut him up at the junction where the Seacourt Park and Ride exits onto the Botley Road, but it was all a bit unclear.

“Was the cyclist in the wrong?

“Even if it wasn’t, one expects better of professional drivers: while it is stressful job, they should be able to manage their emotions.”

The 400 service connects Seacourt Park & Ride in Botley Road with Oxford City Centre and Thornhill Park and Ride in Headington.

Most of Botley Road has a dedicated bus lane and a separate dedicated cycle lane.

In a statement, Oxford Bus Company managing director Phil Southall said: “All our drivers are trained to a high standard, and naturally in a city such as Oxford we place a particular emphasis on safe interaction with vulnerable road users such as cyclists.

“We will be investigating this as a matter of urgency but at present it is too early to speculate on the cause of the disagreement as the video provides no real context.”
