A long-awaited hotel in the centre of Oxford could finally open in June, more than 10 years after planning permission was granted.

Plans to convert the three floors above TSB Bank and La Baguette in George Street from empty offices into a hotel were originally granted in 2006.

After long delays and subsequent changes to plans George Street Hotel is expected to be open in the middle of June.

It will have 41 ‘art deco’ style bedrooms - a mixture of standard and executive rooms.

Brighton One Ltd originally had planning permission for a 27-bedroom hotel with a gym and restaurant but six years later in 2012 the firm wanted to ditch the gym and restaurant in favour of more bedrooms.

The amended scheme was welcomed by council officers, tourism bosses, traders and councillors who said Oxford needed more hotel beds to cope with visitor demand.

Further amendments to the front canopy and entrance doors were passed last year and work is nearly complete on the hotel.

The roof has also been extended to provide an additional storey and it will also make use the basement.

Councillors officers approved the plans saying they would create ‘much-needed- short stay accommodation.

Since the approval visitor numbers have risen with Oxford now the seventh most visited city in the UK by overseas tourists.
