OXFORD rugby league captain Callum Windley has been charged with a ‘punching offence’ after being sent off in his side’s stormy but historic clash against Toronto Wolfpack.
Windley (below) was one of three players dismissed during the Canadian club’s 62-12 Kingstone Press League 1 victory over the Blues in front of a 6,281 crowd at the Lamport Stadium in Toronto last Saturday.
Home prop Jake Emmitt, who was initially sin-binned for a technical offence, was given a red card after staying on the field to throw a series of punches and has been charged with a grade C offence, which carries a suspension of two to three matches.
Wolfpacks’ stand-off Blake Wallace, who was also sent off, and winger Liam Kay, who was sin-binned, were both charged with grade B offences, along with Windley, the third player dismissed.
Toronto hooker Sean Penkywicz, whose late sin-binning meant the Wolfpack’s ended the game with just ten men, has been charged with a minor grade A offence of head-butting.
The charges were brought by the Rugby Football League’s match-review panel and, unless they submit early-guilty pleas, the players will face a hearing in Leeds on Tuesday.
Oxford host Hunslet at Tilsley Park, Abingdon tomorrow (2pm).
