FOLK troubadours will attempt to start a barn dance in the middle of a busy town centre today.

The Melobo Ceilidh band will be stirring up a storm on the cobbles in front of Wantage’s Bear Hotel this morning from 11am.

The group have invited ceilidh ‘caller’ Jane Bird to join the fun in the hopes of creating an outdoor family barn dance.

The performers will also be collecting donations towards South Central Ambulance Service First Responders – volunteers who offer lifesaving first aid before paramedics arrive.

The market place merriment is the latest offering from the weekly Wantage Presents – Music in the Marketplace, but is also a part of this year’s Wantage Summer Festival.

Also part of the festival is today’s Childreyfest at the village of Childrey west of Wantage.

The family-friendly musical celebration will take over the village playing fields from 1pm to 11.30pm.

Ticketscost £7.50 for adults and £2.50 for children.

The Letcombe Singers group, meanwhile, will be performing their production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance as part of the summer festival tonight at Letcombe Regis Village Hall.
