ASTRONOMERS are gearing up to watch the solar eclipse tonight as the sun sets over Oxfordshire.

Star-gazers in the county will be able to get a brief glimpse of the solar show this evening in the last hour leading up to sunset from about 7.15pm to 8.15pm.

It has been said the view in Oxfordshire will show a small part of the sun blocked out by the moon.

Elsewhere some enthusiasts have made the journey to the United States to get the full package including resident John Mayo, from Fringford near Bicester.

Oxford Mail:

People in America have been able to see the full solar eclipse today with the sun completely blocked out by the moon whereas people in England will get a smaller version of the eclipse.

Mr Mayo has travelled all the way to Hopkinsville, in Kentucky, to watch the full solar eclipse.

He said: "We've hauled our telescopes and cameras over to Hopkinsville, which has been dubbed "eclipse city" due to it being close to the area of greatest eclipse (longest eclipse time).

"On the campus that we're booked in at they have sold out all 3,500 car park and viewing spaces.

"This will be my third attempt to see an eclipse at ones I attended in France (1999) and Faroe Islands (2015) were foiled by cloud cover.

"So far the weather is fine, the sun is up and the skies are blue."
