A CITY centre nightclub will stay open until 3am six days a week after residents worried about ‘intolerable’ noise levels dropped their objections.

ATIK nightclub, in Park End Street, had applied to stay open until 3am on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays – at the moment it closes at 2am on those days.

But people living in nearby flats said they were worried about the ‘intolerable’ noise levels from the club and had urged councillors on the licensing committee at Oxford City Council to turn the bid down.

A deal has now been struck which will see opening hours extended until 3am on Mondays and Wednesday, and the club will work with residents to keep the noise down.

As a result the planned meeting of the licensing committee on Monday has been cancelled.

City council spokesman Tom Jennings said: “The city council received several objections to this [ATIK’s] proposal; next week’s committee meeting was due to make a decision on the application.

“However, ATIK and the objectors have since met and agreed an amicable solution.

“ATIK’s amended application is to extend the licensing hours from 2am to 3am on Monday and Wednesday and to produce a dispersal policy and neighbour’s charter.

“With the objection now withdrawn, next week’s meeting has been cancelled and the licence has been granted.”

Objections had been received from people in the Stream Edge flats in Fisher Row.

Dr Roger Hood, chairman of the board of directors from the flats’ management company had written: “The crowd noise in Park End Street between 2am and 3.30am when intoxicated and excited people emerge from clubs in the area is already intolerable.

“There are frequently people hanging around in the street in animated loud conversation and often very loud shouting and screaming.”
