A CITY centre off-licence could be hit with enforcement action after inspectors dished out a low food hygiene score.

Uni Food & Wine convenience store was given a one-star food hygiene rating when Oxford City Council environmental health officers visited in July.

The council has refused to release the full details of the inspection as it 'may be taking further enforcement action'.

But a summary revealed inspectors had 'little' confidence in the store's management team.

It said they had: "Poor appreciation of hazards and control measures and no food safety management system."

The shop was rated 'Fair' when it came to food hygiene and safety and structural compliance but were still told 'major improvement' was necessary.

The council has the power to introduce a wide range of enforcement notices and could even close down the shop.

In 2015 Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service ordered the shop to close temporarily because it presented a risk to people living in the maisonette above.

Fire crews discovered an inadequate alarm system meaning that above occupants would not be alerted quickly in the event of a fire.

Smoke detectors in the shop itself had been removed and there were concerns over the lack of a fire escape route.

Improvements were made shortly after the notice and it re-opened but the fire service served follow up notices over a fire risk assessment and escape route.

Separate investigations were conducted by Oxfordshire County Council's trading standards team and Thames Valley Police.

Plans to install a telephone box outside the shop - submitted by separate company Euro Payphone Ltd - were rejected last month on safety grounds.

Oxford City Council ruled the phone box would restrict pedestrian flow and have a detrimental impact on highway safety.
