VOLUNTEERS will be putting their first aid experience to the test during an emergency exercise.

Members of St John Ambulance (SJA) will be training at Kidlington Fire Station on Tuesday, taking part in a mock-up of a collision between two cars and a motorbike.

The exercise will see around 30 volunteers set up and deal with a series of challenges, staged within the scenario.

They will be faced with the simulated vehicle collision, with casualties, which they will be expected to give immediate first aid to whilst awaiting the arrival of the emergency services.

Unit manager Christopher Tancock said: “This will be as ‘real life’ as we can make it.

“It will test our life saving skills, as well as our knowledge and expertise on everything from radio communications and major incident protocols, to filing in the relevant paperwork.”

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service will also be on hand to help with the training.

Station manager Gary D’Anger said: “We regularly conduct training events to hone our skills and to improve our partnership working with other emergency services.

“We regularly work with St John Ambulance at events all over the county and at incidents when they work with South Central Ambulance Service, particularly road traffic collisions.

“In recent years, we have trained our firefighters to an increased level to deal with life critical injuries including the use of advanced trauma care and defibrillators, and these events provide fantastically realistic scenarios.”
